The Technical R&D Manager (UAV) will lead engineering and product development activities for UAV systems in China. This role is responsible for driving innovation, ensuring engineering excellence, and managing the full product lifecycle—from concept design to mass production—while ensuring alignment with business goals and manufacturing capabilities.Responsibilities
The Technical R&D Manager (UAV) will lead1. Product Development & Lifecycle Management
- Lead the end-to-end UAV product development lifecycle, including concept design, prototyping, validation, testing, and mass production.
- Define product architecture and technical roadmap aligned with business strategy.
- Ensure timely delivery of R&D milestones and product releases.
- Build, lead, and manage multidisciplinary engineering teams (mechanical, electrical, embedded systems, firmware, etc.).
- Establish clear roles, performance metrics, and development plans for team members.
- Drive a culture of innovation, technical excellence, and continuous improvement.
- Oversee design and integration of UAV systems, including:
- Flight control systems
- Navigation & communication modules
- Power systems (battery, motors)
- Sensors and payload integration
- Ensure system performance, stability, and reliability.
- Work closely with Supply Chain and Manufacturing teams to ensure Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Cost (DFC) principles.
- Support supplier selection and technical evaluation of components.
- Ensure smooth transition from prototype to production.
- Establish engineering quality standards, testing protocols, and validation processes.
- Ensure compliance with relevant UAV regulations, safety standards, and certifications.
- Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for product defects or failures.
- Drive research and adoption of new UAV technologies and industry best practices.
- Benchmark against competitors (e.g., DJI, Autel, etc.) to enhance product competitiveness.
- Identify opportunities for product differentiation and IP development.
- Manage multiple R&D projects simultaneously with clear timelines, budgets, and deliverables.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Product, Supply Chain, Operations, Global HQ).
- Report progress, risks, and key decisions to senior stakeholders.
Requirements
Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related fields.
Experience:
From 10 years of experience in R&D / engineering, preferably in high-tech manufacturing.
At least 2-3 years of direct experience in UAV, drone, aerospace, or robotics-related industries.
Proven track record of successfully delivering complex hardware products from concept to production.
Experience working with Chinese manufacturing ecosystems and suppliers is highly preferred.
Previous experience in leadership roles managing engineering teams.
